Day 23: This is my VIDEO BLOG from Puerta Penasco, Mexico... All you folks from Arizona know this part of Mexico as "Rocky Point." I've lost TWO more POUNDS while on the road and I'm fired-up to be 259 LBS. My goal was to do it by 21-days, so I was only 48-hours past that goal. Not bad for such a BIG BOY...

Day Twenty-two

~ Welcome to Day 22 ~

Day 22: Your watching my VIDEO BLOG as I drop to 199 LBS. from being 291 LBS. back in Christmas.

We are safe & sound in Mexico and because we spent all day getting here and getting settled in the resort, I've posted this BLOG late, late at night. I'm sitting on the patio of my suite that overlooks the beautiful pool and I can hear the waves coming in from the ocean just beyond the pool. We have a floor unit which allows the kids easy access to all the great amenities here at this resort.

The family stopped today at Carl's Jr. here in Phoenix and this place is built for FAT PEOPLE like me... They had chili hot dogs, chili-cheese fries, hand-dipped milkshakes, onion rings, fried zucchini, and every other fast-food delight you could think of... And I sat there and watched them eat. My lunch was in the car and I was waiting until we stopped at Walmart to eat.

You'll see me in the photo below eating on a curb in the parking lot of the Walmart... If I've got some turkey, lettuce and a Pelligrino, then I have lunch! My girls stayed with me to keep me company and we shared my cucumber slices together to try and off-set the "grease feast" they had just minutes earlier.

So I weight 261 LBS. today and the only reason I think I didn't lose any weight is because I was in a car for 11-hours yesterday. I barely moved the WHOLE day!

So tomorrow, walks on the beach, fun in the pool with the kids and 500 calories of the food I like that's good for me, should do the trick

Day Twenty-one

~ Welcome to Day 21 ~

Day 21: My VIDEO BLOG is officially on the ROAD! As we travel by car over this great land of ours in search for folks who want to take the 39days.com Challenge...

Are you up to the challenge? I am and I'll prove it as I go to Mexico for two weeks and LOSE weight. That's right people I said LOSE weight...

Look, it's me in Mexico with my family and each day I'm there I'll be getting closer to my goal of 199 LBS.

Sitting in the car for 11-hours gives a person plenty of time to think about everything. The thought that went through my mind is one of gratitude for my wife Cindy and my four girls... They are my biggest fans and have been cheering me on since WAY before Day-1.

I will be 43-years old in two weeks, and 300 LBS. is way too much for an "old man" like me. I knew a gentleman named Larry Miller that died at the age of 64 right after they cut off both of his legs. His poor eating habits and his inability to push away from the table put him six-feet under.

You'll be missed Larry, but not forgotten... Your legacy will live on in me and many others who'll learn from your example; Who'll go on to lead long and productive lives because we've learned from your tragic mistake. My wife thanks you, my children thank you and my unborn grandchildren thank you. Because of Larry Miller, Skinny Dan will live far into old age at the idea weight of 199 pounds.

Thank you again Mr. Miller, may you rest in peace and live forever with your family at the eternal "buffet line" in the sky.

Tomorrow is the big day that we leave for Mexico! And it's my first time every to lose weight on vacation...

Day Eighteen

~ Welcome to Day 18 ~

Day 18: This VIDEO BLOG is helping me stay on track and not get derailed from my goal of losing 100 LBS. by July 24, 2009. I know it's a BIG goal and can't be done in JUST 39-days, but I'm taking this 39-days to do ALL I can to "getter-dun."

I only lost 1/2 pound today but I'll take it! I'm glad the "Apple Day" worked on Day 16, but I don't want to do it again anytime soon. The doctor said I can only have one "Apple Day" every twenty days, so no "Apple Day" for me in awhile... And no more saying or writing the words "Apple Day."

I think maybe it's time to kick-up the exercise now that my body is getting use to the 500-600 calories per day. I've been "moving-the-mass" but not in any concentrated or organized fashion.

Tonight I'll see if I can get Cindy to go to the GYM with me and do some cardio and tomorrow I'll let you know how it goes.

Day 17: This VIDEO BLOG will take you on my ADVENTURE to a buck ninety-nine! Not everyday is laugh and giggles, but I'm excited to be losing weight...

I feel better. It's that simple. You may not be able to notice any weight loss when you look at me, but I notice. I sleep better, I walk better, I breath better, I am just better without the 25 LBS I just lost.

What in the world will it be like when I'm down 50? Then 75? and then the BIG KAHUNA... 100 POUNDS!

I went to RUMBI GRILL today for lunch and it was good times... This is a GREAT place to go if you want good, healthy food fast! (THANKS DAVE)

So if you watched the VIDEO then you know the "APPLE DAY" worked and I got off the weight that wasn't coming off over the previous three days.

How glad am I that it worked? Very.

Tomorrow is another day and I'm fired up, I'm in-it to win-it and I'm taking you with me.

Day Sixteen

Day 16: This VIDEO BLOG is Danny's way to stay on track. You're out there watching and he's in here trying to put the "fun" back in functional when it comes to exercise and eating right.

We all know when we're not eating right, yet we do it anyway... Why? Why do we do things that we know will hurt us? What is going on in our head as that Twinkie makes it's way to our "pie hole?" No disrespect to Hostess and the bakery boys that bring us so many savory snacks, but what are we thinking when we eat that stuff??

This is where Dr. Phil comes in for me... His book not only helps me with the physical part of weight loss, like his idea about "cleaning the environment" but it's also a mental game and each of us need to figure out how that plays out in our own weight loss. Or in ANY behavior we're trying to change.

Okay... this is the third day in-a-row that I weigh 265 pounds so now I'm ready to have my first APPLE DAY. Today I am going to eat 5 medium size apples and very little fluid which should help me loose the unnecessary water weight. I've talked to others that have done the APPLE DAY and they say it works, but as always consult your physician before changing your eating habits.

I'll tell you tomorrow if the APPLE DAY works for me.

Day Fifteen

~ Welcome to Day 15 ~

Day 15: This VIDEO BLOG is following me to 199 pounds of pure love! Watch Danny shrink before your very eyes as he goes from almost 300 LBS. down to the MAGIC number of a buck-99.

To help in my weight-loss, I go to the Genesys Medical Institute where I learned there are three types of fat in the human body:

  1. Structural Fat, the fat that fills-in around organs like "bubble wrap" for the body.
  2. Normal Reserves, the fat the body burns when we eat less then our body needs.
  3. Abnormal Fat, the extra fat stored as "fixed deposits" that are difficult for the body to burn even in emergencies.

I was also told when I would exercise and change my eating habits in the past, my body could only burn the normal fat reserves and resisted burning the abnormal fat. Now when the HCG hormone is introduced, the HCG allows my body to "let go" of the abnormal fat deposits and makes it so I can burn the abnormal fat without burning muscle.

This is where my doctor supervised 500 calorie-a-day food intake comes into play... Because the HCG allows my body to put the abnormal fat "on the menu" for my body to burn, my body starts to live off fat! And the best part is, I have reduced hunger because my body now has access to PLENTY of the abnormal fat.

Now... Please understand, I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. I'm just some 42-year old "fat guy" that went out and did my own research to determine if HCG was right for me... That DOES NOT mean it's right for you. You must do your own research, consult your physician and talk to others that have experienced HCG. Find out all the pros and cons for yourself.

I've been doing this for 15-days and I'm going to continue until I reach my goal... There's no MAGIC here, it's tough to change my lifestyle... It's tough to not gorge myself on my favorite foods... It's tough to "move-the-mass" when the television is calling my name!

I went to dinner with some friends last night for the first time in 14-days and we had a blast! I'm excited to map out my "Dinning-out For Life" so after I reach 199 lbs. I'll be able to go out and have a good meal with great friends. (see Tarahumar's below)

I'm on a nationwide search for all the restaurants that will fit my lifestyle and I'll be posting that list right here!

Today is my Day-of-Rest, my day to recharge for the week... And it will be a BIG week. I need to get everything lined up for spring break because I'm taking my family to Mexico for ten days.

That's right Skinny Dan and 39days.com are going INTERNATIONAL! I'll be doing my daily video blog via Puerto Pinasco, Mexico starting on Day 23 and going all the way to Day 33! Day Thirteen

DAY 13: The VIDEO BLOG is alive and well, even on the weekends... I'm in the backyard and I dropped some more weight... You can compare Day1 to Day 13 and see it in my face... I'm going DOWNTOWN and you can come with me!

Tonight is a big night for me because it will be the first time I've been to dinner with friends since I've started losing all this weight. Wish me luck and I'll give you a FULL report on Day 14.

It's Saturday and I've had to find a few projects to keep me busy so I don't think about food. During the week, I'm so busy that I get distracted, but I've found for me that come the weekend I need a plan to stay out of the kitchen and away from fast food!

So today I'm staying outside helping some folks in the yard... Keeping my head down and moving forward one-step-at-a-time so the next thing I'll know it's dinner with friends!

Day Twelve

DAY 12: The VIDEO BLOG continues and today we took the show on the road!

I'm lucky to have so many friends helping me on this path to "skinny-ville." They've stood by and watched me slowly slip into culinary comma as I gorged myself to 300 LBS. and now they are cheering me towards my new life at 199 LBS.

My biggest hero is my wife Cynthia... She has inherited from me the same love for food without turning it into an addiction. Cindy has encouraged me so much over this last 12-Days and she's made it so I can go the next twelve days. I want her to know how much I love her, for her patience, for her nurturing, and for her acceptance. I truly am a blessed man to have her and our four girls in my life... (You Rock Cindy - 381)

Up until now, old Dr. Phil was just testing us to see if we really want to change. Now on page 49 of his book "The Ultimate Weight Solution" he throws down. This chapter on "Right Thinking" is summed up in a phrase: "Change your thinking and you'll change your weight." Sounds simple, but wrong thinking has stopped me in the past and now I have the tools to move forward!

Danny Day Eleven

DAY 11: The VIDEO BLOG continues as I transform from "Slightly Over-weight" into "Light & Dainty." It's not always easy, but we're having fun with the videos. Today you'll hear what others have to say about Big Dan. (this should be good)


I got to be honest with you, it really did feel like Friday today.... And Cindy made the BEST dinner! And what made it great was the fresh homemade salsa she had with our Mexican Chicken Wraps... I've begged her to give me the recipe for this stuff! Have you ever had salsa so good you could eat it with a spoon? Who needs chips when it tastes that good?

One day I'll get her to let me post the salsa recipe on the blog and then my friends, you're in for a treat!

Dr. Phil said something to me today in his book that hit home... Page 40 asked a very simple question... "Are You Ready?" Out loud I said, as if Dr. Phil was in the chair next to me, "I AM READY!" (buy the book and take his "readiness quiz" to see if you're ready too)

I didn't realize it until now, but I really am ready. I'm ready to change, I ready to NOT be the biggest guy in the room, I'm ready to live a long full life (ABOVE GROUND) and I'm ready to enjoy all that life has to offer at 199 LBS. And I hope you're ready too!

Remember, Skinny people think 200 LBS. is FAT...

Danny Day Nine

Today is Tuesday and I need you to FEEL what it's going to be like when you reach your goal. Here is the link to the goal worksheet:


Take some time now and write another goal. We started yesterday and I want you to take time and really figure out what you want out of life...

I read some more of Dr. Phil's book and wouldn't you know it pages 29 to 39 talked all about GOALS! Even Dr. Phil knows the importance of goals... He calls it "Get-With-It Goal Setting" and I couldn't agree with him more.

He tells us to express our goals in terms of specific behaviors and feelings. He felt so strong about being specific, he used the word "specificity" at least ten times in three pages... Say that word ten time real fast!


The other thing Dr. Phil tells us is to express our goals in terms that can be measured and are realistic...

You found out today on the video blog that it doesn't matter how many times I set a goal to loose weight... If it's unrealistic or done in a way that can't be measured, then I set a goal to fail. And failure sucks.

Remember to Measure the Skinny and set a GOAL to take your iPod to the gym and move the fat!

Today is Monday and I'm ready to talk about one of my favorite subjects... GOALS!!

We all know the importance of setting goals, right? Then why don't we take the time to write these goals down?? They say an unwritten goal is just a wish... How has "wishing" worked for you so far?

Well, then if it's not working do something about it today! I've learned from the MASTERS of goal setting like Zig ZIglar, Anthony Robbins, Stephan Covey and Dr. Wayne Dyer. I'm here to tell you that goals work and I've made them work in my life...

You'll also notice seven steps you'll need to take to better help you accomplish this goal. I will fill it out below for my weight goal so you can get an idea on how to use this worksheet:

I've also read more of Chapter 2 called Get-Real Expectations and Goals from pages 23 to 29 in the book by Dr. Phil called "The Ultimate Weight Solutions."

I really liked this part of the book because it talked about what I should weigh based on me. Remember the old chats in the doctor's office that said if you were 5'10" then you should weight 164 pounds? Well based on my body type that's a load of crap. And Dr. Phil said so on page 28 . And if Dr. Phil said it, it must be true! ( How's that for a "plug" Dr. Phil? )

In 1988 I was in the best shape I've ever been in and I weighed around 195 pounds. Dr. Phil's chart said for my body type I could be between 192 and 211... Now I can get behind that kind of talk! My goal right now is 198 pounds and that, thanks to Dr. Phil, is a realistic expectation.
